2007-2008 GCSF EVENTS
July 7, 2008 – 4:37 pmWelcome to the Geary Community Schools Foundation website. On this page we will let you know what we are currently doing as a Foundation, as well as get you caught up on what we have accomplished during the 2007-2008 school year.
In September we awarded $4,150 in mini grants to the Geary County Infant & Toddler Program, the JCHS Library, Westwood Elementary School and the Geary County Reading Association.
In October the GCSF hosted a chili-feed fundraiser in conjunction with JCHS football homecoming festivities. The JCHS Cheerleaders helped sell tickets. The Muriel Glessner Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established by her family to honor her many years of nursing at Geary Community Hospital. Morris Hill Elementary and Eisenhower Elementary schools were announced as Blue Ribbon Schools by the United States Department of Education. The GCSF purchased the official Blue Ribbon Seal in the form of a bronze medallion for each building to be displayed on the school’s exterior.
In November, the GCSF entered a float in the Junction City Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Christmas Parade which is held the Friday after Thanksgiving. This is the 2nd year of participation.
In December the GCSF entered into a contract with a national search company, Harris Connect, to conduct an alumni search for graduates of JCHS beginning as far back as 1939. A book will be published at the conclusion of this search and will be available for sale.
In February, GCSF hosted a chili feed fundraiser in conjunction with basketball homecoming festivities. Planning for the “9 Holes of Pure Fun” Golf Tournament Fundraiser begins, as well as, planning for the 4th ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF TEACHING BANQUET to be held at the Marriott Convention Center, Monday, May 5, 2008.
In April a new $1000 scholarship was announced. It is the John and Elaine Rucker Scholarship in Honor of H. D. Karns.
In May, the 4th Annual Celebration of Teaching was held with Dr. David Flowers as the guest speaker. Dr. Flowers graduated from JCHS and was a former Associate Superintendent for the district. He is currently the Superintendent of USD 308 -Hutchinson. The Geary Community Schools Foundation awarded eight (8) teacher scholarships for $800 each, four (4) student scholarships for $1000 each, the Marlene Lochamy Memorial Scholarship for $2000, the Muriel Glessner Nursing Scholarship for $1000 and the John and Elaine Rucker Scholarship in honor of H. D. Karns for $1000. Mini-grant applications were sent out to all USD 475 Staff.
